RAM 2027
RAM 2027, explained for beauty packaging.
The Recyclability Assessment Methodology is how UK packaging EPR decides whether your household packaging is green, amber or red, and therefore what you pay. RAM 2027 applies to packaging supplied from 1 January 2027.
What RAM assesses
Large producers must assess each item of household packaging (or each separately assessed component) at four stages: collection, sortation, reprocessing and application. Before that, a set of automatic red criteria applies, and each item is classified by its predominant material.
- Green at every stage means green overall.
- Amber at any stage (with no red) means amber overall.
- Red at any stage means red overall.
Why beauty packs are harder than they look
Pumps with steel springs, glass pipettes with elastomer bulbs, metallised sleeves, carbon-black closures, labels whose adhesive nobody tested in a hot wash, PET bottles tinted amber for the shelf. Each of these is a fact RAM asks about, and most of them live with a supplier.
