How pumps and closures complicate packaging recyclability
Springs, balls, gaskets and dip tubes: why dispensing systems are the hardest part of a beauty pack to rate, and where the published guidance we encode runs out.
First decide what you are rating
Before any criterion applies you have to decide whether the dispenser is a separate component or part of an integrated item. RAM 2027 assesses integrated components that cannot be separated as one item, rated on the predominant material by weight, and assesses separable components in their own right. A screw pump the consumer can unscrew is typically a separate component. A crimped pump on a fragrance flacon is not something a consumer will ever remove, so the flacon and pump behave as one item.
That decision moves the answer. Rating a crimped assembly on predominant material by weight usually means rating heavy glass with a small metal and plastic dispenser attached. Rating the same pump as a separate component asks a completely different set of questions. Record which mode you chose and why, because it is the assumption most likely to be challenged.
Undersized parts
Sortation requires at least 40 mm in at least two dimensions for paper, board, fibre-based composites and rigid plastics. A pump actuator, an orifice reducer, a pipette cap or a lipstick mechanism component will often fail that on its own. The saving provision is reattachment: an undersized part that can be reattached is assessed as part of the integrated item rather than rated as a doomed fragment. An undersized part that cannot be reattached is red. So the practical question for a small part is not only what it is made of but whether the consumer can put it back on the pack before disposal.
Trigger sprays
Trigger sprays are treated bluntly: a trigger spray containing glass, metal or non-PE or non-PP parts is red at reprocessing for rigid plastics. Most conventional trigger mechanisms contain a metal spring or a metal ball, so this is a criterion that catches real products rather than edge cases. All-plastic trigger designs exist; if you use one, get the supplier to state it in writing rather than inferring it from a drawing.
Closures on HDPE and PP
On HDPE and PP containers, steel, aluminium, PS, PVC and thermoset caps are red at reprocessing. That covers a lot of premium beauty: aluminium overshells on serum pumps, metal-effect caps that are actually metal, thermoset closures chosen for feel and weight. The same rule set also reds PVC, aluminium, metallised PET and metallised PS labels or sleeves, and PVDC barriers, and EVOH above 5% by weight, and any additive that raises the density to 1 g/cm³ or more so the item sinks in float-sink separation.
Closures on PET
PET bottles are separated by flotation, so density is the deciding fact rather than material name. A closure that is not PET and has a density over 1 g/cm³ will not float away from the PET and is red. The same logic applies to labels and sleeves that are not PET and are denser than water. A polypropylene cap floats. A filled or heavily pigmented closure may not, and it is the supplier who knows which. Any EVOH at all is red on PET bottles, as is silicone.
Liners, gaskets and valves
The parts you cannot see are the parts that fail. On HDPE and PP, inserts, liners and seals made of PS, PVC, PU, nylon, heavy PET, PC, PMMA, thermoset or silicone are red at reprocessing. That list captures the silicone valve in an airless dispenser, the PVC wad in a cap, the polyurethane foam disc in a jar closure and the nylon wiper in a mascara. On PP and PET thermoforms, softer inserts such as HDPE, LDPE, paper or PET are amber at application rather than red, which is a useful substitution direction when a liner cannot simply be removed.
Where the guidance we encode runs out
One gap is worth stating plainly. The guidance we have encoded lists trigger sprays with metal parts as red and metal caps as red for HDPE and PP, but it gives no explicit criterion for a metal spring or ball bearing inside a pump body. BeautyPack records those as subcomponents and does not rate them, and this is recorded as a known gap in our implementation status rather than resolved by assumption.
If your range depends on standard sprung pumps, and most beauty ranges do, do two things: ask your dispenser supplier for a written statement of every metal part and whether a spring-free or plastic-spring equivalent is available in the same neck finish, and put the question to PackUK rather than relying on any vendor, including us, to have decided it for you. Rigid plastics other than PET, HDPE and PP, such as the PS, ABS, PC and PMMA used in compacts and lipstick mechanisms, are also handled only by the generic red criteria and the collection coverage fallback in our encoding, so they deserve the same caution.
Checklist
- Decide and document separate component versus integrated item for every dispenser.
- Ask for a part-level material list: actuator, spring, ball, gasket, valve, dip tube.
- Get a density statement for any non-PET closure or label used on a PET bottle.
- Check whether undersized parts can be reattached before disposal.
- Flag springs and other metal internals as an open question with your supplier and PackUK, and record the answer when it arrives.
